Nestled within the forests of Suntikoppa is the abode of a client with traditional aesthetics. Suntikoppa home showcases the luxury living spaces of traditional India homes while its design focuses on harnessing the pleasant climate of the region by implementing passive cooling techniques and maximizing daylight.
The house is zoned along a central spine with the Living on one side and kitchen and dining on the other. An open to sky courtyard in the centre becomes the focal point of the house, connecting all the spaces across its two floors together. The courtyard also acts as a light well for the house and a funnel for the rising hot air to escape through the open roof above it (stack effect), thus maintain a comfortable and well-lit interior space.
The more private bedrooms on both the floors are separated from the living spaces by the staircase corridor. Due to the private nature of the site, all rooms feature large full-length windows and sliding doors. These openings are protected from harsh direct sunlight by deep overhangs of the verandah slope roofs. The open verandah winding on all sided of the house is split in two parts by the built keeping the verandah of the bedroom private from that of the living spaces.
The steep slope of the exiting site provided the opportunity to create an interest connection between the external art room and the main house as it can be accessed directly from the family room on the first floor. The first floor also features a quiet library cum study room on the south with a bay window that frames the beautify sun set that can be seen from the site.
